According to the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) data, China is the world's leading pepper producer with 16.65 million kilograms, followed by Mexico with 2,818,44 million kilograms, Indonesia with 2,772.59 million kilograms, and 2,636.9 million kilograms. Turkey and Spain follow with 1,472.85 kilograms.
According to the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) data, more than 36 million kilograms (36 million tons) of pepper was produced in an area of more than two million hectares in 2020. In the light of these data, world pepper production has been increasing steadily in the last ten years.
In 2020, a total of 36,136.99 million kilos of pepper was produced at an average of 1.75 kg per square meter on an area of 2,069,990 hectares worldwide.
The Netherlands, which managed to produce 28.1 kg of pepper per square meter, became the world's best performing country in pepper production.
China, one of the largest pepper producing countries, accounts for 46.08% of the world's pepper production; Mexico 7.8%; Indonesia 7.67%; Turkey produces 7.3% and Spain 4.07%. These five countries meet 72.92% of world pepper production.
The World's Largest Pepper Producing Countries
China, which is the world's largest producer with 16,650.85 million kilograms, achieved a yield of 2.27 kg per square meter in an area of 734,961 hectares in 2020.
Mexico, which is the second largest country in the world in pepper production, produced 2,818,44 million kilograms of pepper with a yield of 1.78 kg per square meter in an area of 157,911 hectares in 2020.
Indonesia, the third largest producer, produced 2.772.59 million kilograms of pepper with a yield of 0.88 kg/m2 in an area of 314,772 hectares.
Turkey, which produces 2,636.9 million kilograms in an area of 91,491 hectares in 2020, is the fourth largest producer in the world. Turkey's average yield per square meter is 2.88 kg.
Spain, which ranks fifth in world pepper production with 1,472.85 million kilograms, produces 6.77 kg per square meter on an area of 21,750 hectares.
